Goal Setting Gains in Schools: Emerging Testimonies

At the beginning of every school term, Learnwell Initiative UG guides pupils in its schools of intervention on goal setting. It is a proven approach which, according to Schunk, D. H. and Zimmerman, B. J. in the 2003 edition of the Handbook of Psychology, makes children more self-efficacious, with greater self-regulated practice.

In 2026, goals were set in two primary schools in Wakiso and Luwero Districts: St. Mary Nursery and Primary School and Kyeswa Memorial Primary School. Children in Primary Six and Seven set their goals. A midterm review conducted in July indicated that some children had made progress — some in their grades, others in the skills they wanted to improve.

Ibra, a pupil at Kyeswa Memorial Primary School, set a goal to be the best footballer in his school. When asked whether he had made progress towards his goal by the second term, Ibra said, “I have so far scored 15 goals.”

Ssali, a pupil at St. Mary Nursery and Primary School, set his goal to establish a farm. At the time of the review, Ssali said, “I started with one local hen because I heard they sell at a higher market value. It has laid 15 eggs and I am expecting chicks soon.”
