Interesting Insights as Learnwell Hit the HIV Sensitization Trail in Schools

Learnwell Initiative UG focused on holding HIV sensitization sessions in secondary schools after the Uganda AIDS Commission 2025 report pointed out that young people aged 15 to 24 had the highest infection rate in Uganda, particularly girls.

The organization interacted with over 400 students from four secondary schools in Wakiso District, Kikaaya College, Excel Millennium High School, Zana Secondary School and Nanziga Secondary School, talking about a range of topical concerns on sexually transmitted diseases, with emphasis on HIV/AIDS.

Over 60% of the students in these schools showed limited awareness about AIDS, with many picturing HIV as easily treatable. Underneath this lack of awareness lay a real risk of infection, since most had never seen how severely a person’s health can deteriorate once infected. Forty percent of the students asked about HIV testing, and 20 percent wanted to know more about PrEP.

Below are excerpts of some of the questions raised during the discussions.
