Learnwell Initiative Joins Nansana Municipality’s Drive for a Clean and Green Nansana

Learnwell Initiative UG has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Nansana Municipal Council. Under it, the two parties agreed to work together to make the municipality clean and green.

Following the MOU, Learnwell Initiative was invited to a stakeholders’ meeting at the municipal headquarters on 12 August 2026. At the meeting, the municipality shared its new environment and climate plans with partners. Our Operations Director, Christine Nakalema, represented the organisation.

A shared vision for Nansana

The meeting was held under the theme:

A green, healthy and sustainable Nansana Municipality where people, nature and enterprise live in harmony through responsible stewardship, inclusive participation and innovative solutions for present and future generations.

Learnwell Initiative joined a wide group of stakeholders, including:

  • the Ministry of Water and Environment
  • the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development
  • the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI)
  • NGOs, community-based organisations, schools and other partners

Four plans for a cleaner municipality

The Senior Environment Officer opened the meeting and introduced the four documents being shared with stakeholders:

  • the Environment Action Plan
  • the Climate Change Action Plan
  • the Disaster Risk Management Plan
  • the Solid Waste Management Strategy

Every participant received copies of these plans to guide their own work in the community.

What the Mayor asked of all of us

The Mayor of Nansana Municipality welcomed the Government’s monthly National Cleaning Day, which gives residents a day to clean their surroundings and gather waste. He was concerned, however, that waste is still being dumped anywhere, leaving parts of the municipality contaminated. He announced that collection vehicles will pass through the municipality’s divisions to pick up waste on the coming cleaning days.

He stressed the need for more public awareness on how to manage waste, and said people should be sensitised before any enforcement, for example against building in wetlands. He also urged officers to go out on the ground and see the issues for themselves.

Representatives from both ministries echoed this message and urged everyone to support the Government’s programmes for a clean city. GGGI presented its waste management work across Greater Kampala, both past achievements and ongoing efforts.

Our commitment

In closing, the representative from the Ministry of Water and Environment asked every participant to make environmental issues and waste management part of their own activities. All participants, including Learnwell Initiative, then signed a commitment pledge to take part in the actions.

For us, this fits our mission. Our work is about keeping children in school, and a child’s education doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Blocked drains flood homes and cost children school days. Uncollected rubbish brings illness and more missed lessons. A clean Nansana is part of a fair chance to learn.

What came next

We took up the Mayor’s call for awareness almost straight away. Less than two weeks after the meeting, we launched the Clean Nansana Blitz, a 14-day campaign that ran from 24 August to 6 September 2026 and was built directly on the four plans we received. Read about the campaign here.

We’re grateful to Nansana Municipal Council for welcoming us as a partner. If you’d like to be part of this work, volunteer with us.

A clean Nansana is a classroom. Let’s build it together.
